«No, no, io faccio meno fatica» gli spiegò Ugo chiarendo l'equivoco.
In sigla, CMN.

The pub “Vittorio Emanuele” was a den of engine enthusiasts; Enzo began to hang out there regularly. And the more often he was going, the more letters he was writing to his mother Adalgisa assuring her that everything was going perfectly, he was making a fortune in the North, and soon, thanks to the right connections, he would fulfill their dreams. The "right connection" was with UGO SIVOCCI. They met at the “Vittorio Emanuele” pub, speaking about female dancers and opera singers. Ferrari mistook him for the most famous Alfredo, Ugo’s brother, a good road bicycle racer active in the generation dominated by Costante Girardengo.
"No, no, I do not struggle that much," said Ugo clarifying the misunderstanding. "I left the bicycle, I have dedicated myself to cars." Ugo worked for the National Mechanical Constructions. In abbreviation, CMN (Costruzioni Meccaniche Nazionali). He tested cars and drove them too as the CMN did not mind participating in competitions. "They look for smart people who can help out," said SIVOCCI to Enzo.
"Why don’t you leave Turin and move to Milan?"
It was like hitting the jackpot. The Giovannoni salary was fair but not so rewarding. In addition, the more Ferrari was driving, the more was feeling the return of his childhood desires. What did he tell Peppino one night spent idly? That when he grow-up he would imitate Ralph De Palma, an Italian who had found glory in America behind the wheel of racing cars of his dreams. Perhaps the CMN was not a good car for Indianapolis, but somewhere he had to make a start.
He came away from Turin with no regrets. He entrusted to SIVOCCI even with searching for a house in Milan. A widow rented him a room. He was almost never there. When he was not behind the steering wheel for business purposes, he was there for pleasure. He had to put up with the route Turin-Trento-Trieste, a grueling bicycle race. He was driving one of the escort car and his presence brought luck to SIVOCCI’s brother, Alfredo, who first crossed the line. And again escorting the motorbike Garelli on which Girardi won the North-South Race, a crossing on two wheels from Milan to Naples.

Stavolta, in termini letterari.

It was a time of newfound happiness. Not even a year before, after the disastrous result of the job interview with the engineer Soria in Fiat, he had toyed with the idea of suicide. Now he was full of beans.
When SIVOCCI prospected him the opportunity to test his skills as a driver in a real race, Enzo was thrilled to bits. On October 5, 1919, was scheduled the Parma-Poggio di Berceto, an uphill competition on dusty roads dotted with potholes.
Ferrari chose it willingly as a theater of racing debut: the streets on which they would have tried their hands had been built by Maria Luisa, a woman whom knew very well.
Maria Luisa, a daughter of the Emperor of Austria, was the second wife of Napoleon.
Enzo was an enthusiast of Bonaparte and his legend.
As a child he used to collect every publication and every writing about the soldier who left Corsica to win the glory of Paris and the world.
"I consider him the greatest hero in the history of mankind," repeated stubbornly. And he has always remained a sincere admirer of Napoleon, in spite of any cultural and historical revisionism.
Maria Luisa, after the defeat of her little loved husband, after Waterloo and the Congress of Vienna, rebuilt her life in Emilia. As the Duchess of Parma she won the respect of her people.
The road, on which the young Ferrari would soon launch his CMN 2300, was created out of her project. Strange woman, thought Enzo when timekeepers announced he was going to get his turn.
At eleven o'clock in the morning the career of Ferrari pilot officially began.
Next to him in the car, as a mechanic, was Nino Berretta.
Their race lasted fifty minutes.
Enzo made no mistakes and finished fourth in the category standings and twelfth in the full standings.
The winner was Antonio Ascari, a person, as we shall see later, who might have decisive influence on the projects of young Ferrari.
"Well done, you're good”, so SIVOCCI said about his performance. "So how about coming with me to Sicily? There is no excuse: if one knows how to drive, he must participate in the Targa Florio."

The Targa Florio evoked an incredible charm in car drivers. It was a tremendous competition, spread over deep Sicily mule tracks, in the Madonie region. Vincenzino Florio, who invented it, was a legendary figure; having been rewarded by him had a taste of the ultimate consecration.
Surviving the Targa Florio was like a bachelor's degree for those who loved driving racing cars.
In fact, in 1919 in the Targa Florio Ferrari survived twice. First, during the trip that he and his faithful SIVOCCI started in Milan to reach the South. Behind the wheel of the CMN that they used during the competition, they ran into a terrible blizzard in the highlands of Abruzzo. Secondly, while they were taking great pains to keep the cars on the road, wolves jumped out of the woods.
Real wolves! Like a scene from western comics, Enzo pulled out the gun he had bought in Turin: revolver shots scared off hungry animals. The shooting lessons learned from his classmate Toni as a child were not used in war, but this time proved to be very useful.
Having arrived in Sicily, things went even worse. During the race Ferrari had firstly problems with the fuel tank and then he ran into a strange traffic jam caused by a pre-election rally of Mr. Vittorio Emanuele Orlando.
In fact, he finished out of time limit. However, he managed to be ranked ninth, also because the story of the wolves attack in the mountains of Abruzzo made him popular.
In Sicily, though, were those who did not believe the other story about the delay caused by the rally: “This young gentleman from Modena - friends of Don Vincenzino Florio were saying - has too vivid imagination and probably cannot drive very well”.
They would change their minds a year later, when exactly at the Madonie circuit Enzo Ferrari reappeared with an Alfa Romeo.

Among the car pioneers, the Alfa Romeo was perceived and taken as the crucial point of reference.
At the beginning the Fiat had also participated in races, but it did not take long to realize that Senator Agnelli was little fascinated by them, envisioning his factory mainly in the industrial character out of sport competition temptation.
"Alfa," recalled Ferrari, "stands for the Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili.
Yet it had only had as a badge the Visconti snake and the amaranth cross. It was born out of the initiative of a Milanese, Cavalier Stella, in partnership with Darracq, a French firm.
This company had sold its shares before the outbreak of World War II. During the war it came under the direction of Nicola Romeo, a professor of Naples, destined for an industrial career and policy that would have lead him to the Senate.
He revived a car program which enabled to construct fabulous cars by the company that during the war had made nothing but bullets, tractors and many other devices that had nothing to do with cars...”
To that badge, the Visconti snake and the amaranth cross, young Enzo has added his name for many years.
Indeed, the relationship between him and Alfa, between him and the parent company, has been developed through intense ups and downs, culminating in a break as theatrical as inevitable.

Nevertheless the "marriage" with the Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili with an unquiet Ferrari came out as a result of a quarrel. To his mother Adalgisa he announced in 1920 to have invested part of his first earnings in the purchase of a 4500 Isotta Fraschini, the car by which he intended to replace the worn-out CMN. Also his friend SIVOCCI encouraged him to do so.
But Adalgisa strongly expressed her objection: "You’ve spent too much and you’ll regret." In fact, Enzo has quickly regretted; in his life he often late understood the good intentions of his mother.
With the Isotta Fraschini the pilot Ferrari was presented again on the slopes liked by Maria Luisa, improving his previous year rank in Berceto. He was third in full standings in the race won by Giuseppe Campari.
Campari had an intriguing personality. Awfully rich, has stunned the family by announcing his absolute indifference to business. He was interested in only three things: cars, opera and cuisine. Plus a fourth: women.
To a guy like him, Enzo was irresistibly attracted. They definitely had very common tastes. As a child, Ferrari had dreamed of a career as a tenor, but soon he realized that morning gargles would never made up for his lack of voice. "Unfortunately, I was and I am disastrously out of tune," he confessed to Luciano Pavarotti once.
Admitting that he had a little, sweet regret: he wished to chant "All’alba vincerò" to be the protagonist of Turandot in front of the audience at La Scala.
Campari's voice was certainly better than Enzo’s, but he was exaggerating while proclaiming, usually after giving abundant libations, to be ready for the Scala theater.
Ferrari let him talk, knowing that contradicting him meant they were forced to spend the night listening to his frantic performances. Enzo tried to convince his friend to give up his singing ambitions, but could not prevent him from being engaged in a Traviata in a theater of Bergamo. But traviato, [that is “being led astray”, n.d.t.], was Campari himself; an irritated melomaniac threw him from the loggia a pair of driver’s gloves, urging him to focus fully on his racings.
The music lover was right. “Not only was Campari a driver with exceptional skills,” recalled Ferrari, “but he also was an indomitable fighter, a man who paid no heed to risk in order to win, neither to many other technical solutions. Let me explain. During the tests to the Mille Miglia in 1928 I was with him in the car a step from Raticosa.
Our seats were two simple baquetes, as they were called at that time, that is seats fixed to a simple lattice anchored to the chassis with iron wire and four bolts.

Avevano decisamente gusti comuni.

Fermiamoci a guardare!".
Bisugna pur allenas a pissas adoss!"».

And suddenly, from the wooden floor, began coming out splashes and falling on our faces. Overcoming the engine roar I shouted to Campari: "I hope it has not been broken a sleeve! Let's stop and look." He did not answer. I looked at him stunned. What kind of man was it to neglect such danger? I watched him from head to foot, and so I realized that from his always-too-short overalls were coming out long gingham pants, clipped with a strap to the socks. And it was exactly where the liquid was leaking out, which then bounces off the whirlwinds watered the interior.
Dismayed, I turned to my companion in Milanese dialect, knowing that this he would answer. "Peppin" I yelled "se gh'è” (“Peppino, what’s happened?”). He said, "Ohè, tu vórret minga che me fermi intant che sunt in allenament? Bisugna pur allenas a pissas adoss!" ». (“Hey, would you want me to stop while I’m in training? You must also train to piss on yourself.")
And so it was, that Campari went down in history as the man who had dared to pee on the great Ferrari. On the other hand, he could do it as they loved each other and Enzo has not forgotten that he persuaded Giorgio Rimini, an Sicilian engineer who ran the motorsports activities of Alfa, to join the young driver from Modena to his team. Rimini had many qualities, including a massive dose of cunning. So cunning that he can be remembered as the first (and last) person being able to deceive Ferrari on contracts.
And this was a lesson that Enzo would put to good use, building over time a reputation as a tough negotiator, indomitable and attentive to the smallest detail.
At the sight of Rimini, in the afternoon in 1920, perhaps the son of Adalgisa paid the price of emotion.
In short, it was decided to buy a special car, a six-liter six-cylinder G1 that used some futuristic solutions tested in America.
Rimini prepared a contract, made impatient Ferrari to sign it, attached a hefty advance and then, with a beaming smile, asked the rampant from Modena to wait patiently for the race car delivery.
