The story as told on the previous page in "Alfa Romeo notizie" n°45 of 1983 deserves some clarification.
Every legend, as we all know, contains truths, and so, in our case, it seems certain that it was Sivocci's idea to paint the image of the Quadrifoglio on the side of the RL.
Ugo proposed to the whole team the use of that symbol and his companions, in order to distinguish themselves during the XIV TF, thought to adopt, each of them, a different background: Sivocci used a rhombus, Ascari a triangle and Campari a circle..
La storia così come è raccontata nella pagina precedente su “Alfa Romeo notizie" n°45 del 1983 merita qualche precisazione.
Ogni leggenda, si sa, contiene delle verità e quindi, nel nostro caso, appare certo che l'idea di utilizzare l'immagine del Quadrifoglio sulla fiancata della RL fu di Sivocci.
Ugo propose a tutta la squadra l'utilizzo di quel simbolo e i suoi compagni, per distinguersi durante la XIV TF, pensarono di adottare, ognuno di loro, uno sfondo differente: Sivocci usò un rombo, Ascari un triangolo e Campari un cerchio.

Sivocci won that race (it was the 1923 Targa Florio) and in the commemorative photos taken in the days following that victory, the Alfa-Romeo logo was inserted inside his QV, probably to 'make official' that from then on that would become the symbol that Alfa-Romeo would use on its racing cars. Here is the photo with the detail of the Alfa logo, inside the four-leaf clover.
Sivocci vinse quella gara (era la Targa Florio del 1923) e nelle foto commemorative fatte nei giorni successivi a quella vittoria, venne inserito all’interno del suo QV il logo Alfa-Romeo, probabilmente per “ufficializzare” che da lì in poi quello sarebbe diventato il simbolo che Alfa-Romeo avrebbe utilizzato sulle sue vetture da corsa. Purtroppo pochi mesi dopo (durante le prove del 2° GP di Monza e 1° GP d’Europa) Sivocci perse la vita ed in suo onore il QV su rombo venne ritirato, proprio come avviene anche al giorno d’oggi, per esempio con la maglia dei grandi campioni a carriera finita.
Addirittura, a seguito della sua morte, l’intera squadra Alfa-Romeo venne ritirata e non partecipò alla gara del giorno successivo.
Unfortunately a few months later (during the tests of the 2nd Monza GP and the 1st European GP) Sivocci lost his life and in his honour the QV on rhombus was withdrawn, just like it happens nowadays, for example with the jersey of the great champions at the end of their career.
Indeed, following his death, the entire Alfa-Romeo team was withdrawn and did not take part in the next day's race.
When it came to deciding which symbol to use from then on, between the circular and the triangular background, the latter was chosen. This choice was probably made by the drivers themselves who wanted to indicate in that missing point (from the 4 vertices of the rhombus to the 3 of the triangle) the loss of their team-mate, thus remembering his passing forever.
Enzo Ferrari, witness and protagonist of those tragic events, never denied the essence of this tale, indirectly confirming its veracity. 🍀

Dovendo quindi decidere, da lì in avanti, quale simbolo utilizzare, tra lo sfondo circolare e quello triangolare venne scelto quest’ultimo. Questa scelta fu probabilmente fatta dagli stessi piloti che vollero indicare in quella punta mancante (dai 4 vertici del rombo ai 3 del triangolo) la perdita del loro compagno di squadra, ricordandone in questo modo e per sempre la sua scomparsa.
Enzo Ferrari, testimone e protagonista di quei tragici avvenimenti, non smentì mai l’essenza di questo racconto, confermandone indirettamente la veridicità.🍀
